The Highlander Hotel Is Looking for an Assistant Manager!

Are you ready for the next step in your hospitality career? Do you enjoy leading a team, creating memorable guest experiences, and improving daily operations? At The Highlander Hotel, you’ll have the opportunity to put your leadership skills and passion for hospitality to work in a colourful and dynamic boutique hotel in the heart of Amsterdam.

The Highlander is a small-scale hotel where teamwork and personal involvement are essential. As Assistant Manager, you won’t just be focused on managing and organising; you’ll also be actively involved in the day-to-day operations. You’ll step in wherever needed, work closely with different departments, and help ensure that every guest enjoys a comfortable and memorable stay.

Together with the Location Manager, team members, and interns, you’ll make sure daily operations run smoothly. Are you hands-on, enjoy taking responsibility, and like supporting and developing others? Then we’d love to meet you!

Working at The Highlander Hotel

The Highlander Hotel is a creative and stylish boutique hotel in the centre of Amsterdam. With uniquely designed rooms, colourful floors, and a lively atmosphere, the hotel reflects the diversity and energy of the city. From comfortable king-size beds to spacious bathrooms with rain showers, everything at The Highlander is about character, comfort, and a distinctive guest experience.

As a smaller hotel, we have short communication lines and everyone is closely involved in daily operations. You won’t just be working behind the scenes; you’ll also be visible on the floor and in direct contact with guests and colleagues. Together, you’ll ensure high service standards, a welcoming atmosphere, and strong teamwork throughout the hotel.

About Highland Group

Highland Group is an ambitious, family-owned company with six unique hotels in the heart of Amsterdam. Each hotel has its own character, style, and atmosphere, but they all share the same core values: personal attention, genuine hospitality, and a strong sense of teamwork.

At Highland Group, you’ll have the opportunity to take initiative, contribute ideas for improvement, and develop yourself within the organisation. You’ll be part of an informal working environment where collaboration, involvement, and personal initiative are valued.

What Will You Do as Assistant Manager?

As Assistant Manager, you’ll be the right-hand person to the Location Manager and play an important role in the daily operations of The Highlander. You’ll combine leadership and organisational responsibilities with an active, hands-on role in the hotel. Because we are a smaller location, you’ll help out across different departments whenever needed and stay closely connected to what’s happening on the floor.

You’ll be a point of contact for employees and interns, keep an overview of daily operations, and ensure everyone works well together. With your positive attitude and practical approach, you’ll contribute to a pleasant working environment and an excellent guest experience.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Location Manager with the daily management and organisation of the hotel;

  • Actively participating in daily operations and assisting across different departments whenever needed;

  • Guiding, motivating, and supporting employees and interns;

  • Encouraging teamwork and contributing to a positive working atmosphere;

  • Monitoring service quality and ensuring an excellent guest experience;

  • Handling guest feedback, questions, and complaints in a professional manner;

  • Identifying areas for improvement and contributing ideas to make work processes more efficient;

  • Assisting with planning, administration, and other organisational tasks;

  • Helping onboard new employees and contributing to the development of the team.

What Are We Looking For?

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, guest-oriented professional who enjoys taking responsibility but also understands that, in a smaller hotel, everyone needs to roll up their sleeves and work together. You’re a real team player, can keep an overview of daily operations, and enjoy guiding and supporting colleagues and interns. You can easily switch between leading the team and getting involved in the practical side of the job.

In addition, you have:

  • A completed MBO-level vocational qualification or equivalent, preferably in hotel management or hospitality;

  • At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory role within the hotel industry or a comparable hospitality environment;

  • A genuine passion for hospitality and an eye for detail;

  • A proactive, independent, and hands-on approach;

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to stay on top of things, even during busy periods;

  • Strong communication skills and an interest in guiding employees and interns;

  • Excellent written and spoken English;

  • Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage but is not a requirement;

  • Flexibility to work weekends;

  • You live in Amsterdam or the surrounding area.

What Do We Offer?

Working at The Highlander means joining a dynamic boutique hotel where no two days are the same. You’ll have plenty of responsibility, be closely involved in daily operations, and have the opportunity to put your own ideas into practice.

We also offer:

  • Good primary and secondary employment benefits;

  • A salary based on your experience and in accordance with the Dutch Hospitality Collective Labour Agreement (Horeca CAO);

  • A varied role combining leadership responsibilities with hands-on operational work;

  • A small-scale working environment with short communication lines and a close-knit team;

  • Plenty of interaction with guests, employees, and interns;

  • A basic pension scheme and an additional pension scheme;

  • Travel reimbursement for commuting by public transport, up to a maximum of €200 per month;

  • An informal working environment where initiative and new ideas are appreciated;

  • Fun summer and winter events with colleagues from across Highland Group;

  • Opportunities to develop yourself further and grow within our organisation.
