What is the difference between a Porter and a Concierge?
A Porter usually works near the hotel entrance, welcoming guests and assisting with luggage, while a Concierge is often based near the reception desk and focuses on providing personalised guest services and local recommendations. This may include recommending a nearby restaurant, helping guests find an ATM or suggesting activities in the area.
Among the available vacancies, you may also find positions such as Night Porter. The title Night Concierge is less commonly used; similar overnight guest service responsibilities may fall under a Night Receptionist position.
Depending on the hotel and its service concept, both Porter jobs and Concierge jobs may involve daytime, evening or night shifts. Guest service is an important part of hotel operations throughout the day.

Working as a Hotel Concierge
As a Concierge, your main responsibility is to help hotel guests make the most of their stay. You act as a local expert, providing advice about attractions, restaurants, events and activities in the surrounding area. You keep up to date with what's happening in the city, including popular destinations and new places worth visiting.
You also assist guests with making reservations and organising activities. This may include booking restaurants, arranging transportation, helping with travel plans or providing information about flights, nightlife and local experiences.
Depending on the hotel, you may also receive mail and packages, coordinate special guest requests and work with other departments to provide a high standard of personalised service.
A successful Concierge is knowledgeable, approachable and proactive. By anticipating guests' needs and responding professionally to their requests, you contribute to a positive guest experience and help resolve potential issues before they become complaints.
Working as a Hotel Porter
As a Porter, you are often one of the first people guests meet when they arrive at a hotel. You welcome them, offer assistance with luggage and help them find their way around the property. Depending on the hotel, you may also assist with parking arrangements, transportation and other arrival or departure services.
Your responsibilities can include helping guests carry their luggage, escorting them to their rooms and providing information about hotel facilities. You may also assist with restaurant reservations, museum visits, sightseeing tours and other local activities.
In addition to guest service, a Porter may have responsibilities related to monitoring the hotel entrance and identifying unusual or unauthorised activity. When necessary, you follow the hotel's safety and security procedures and inform the appropriate colleagues or security personnel.
As a Porter, you work closely with the Front Office team to ensure guests receive a warm welcome and enjoy a smooth arrival and departure experience.
